Snow and Ice: Sidewalks are your responsibility

According to Montgomery County, '' A person is responsible for removing snow and ice on any sidewalk, other walkway on or adjacent to property that the person owns, ... to provide a pathway wide enough for safe pedestrian and wheelchair use within 24 hours after the end of the precipitation that caused the condition''. More details here.

That tree between the street and the walkway in front of your home

Homeowners in our Cedar Valley Community typically find a tree and a piece of green between the sidewalk and the street in front of their home. That little piece of land is to be maintained by the homeowner!

For tree pruning, there are a few exceptions, however. To simply show who is exempt of pruning the trees, please take a look at the map on the right.

  • You are responsible for pruning if your home is located along any of the blue streets. The bus route is marked in red, and those trees are maintained by Montgomery County. For all other streets, i.e., the blue streets, home owners carry responsibility for tree pruning.

  • Tip: Keep the tree limbs elevated along the sidewalk. Keep the branches trimmed so as not to interfere with persons walking on the sidewalk. A minimum height of 7' from the ground is a good gauge for pruning. After pruning, please seal the pruned area to keep pests out. For pruning tips check here, for example.

Your trash & recycling

Pickup: have trash/recycling out before 7:00am on service day

Standard household trash bags are easily and frequently picked apart by large birds and other animals for food. The result is trash spread across the street. This is not acceptable to you or your neighbors.

Please keep trash in solid containers (obtainable at most hardware stores) or use trash bags that are strong enough to resist birds, squirrels and other wild animals, e.g., use bags designed for construction debris (also available from hardware stores).
Please also note that trash always needs to be in trash bags that should go in solid containers for pickup.

Recycling containers can be obtained from Montgomery County for free. Available are:

  • 22-gallon Recycling Bin (bottles, plastic, etc.)

  • Wheeled Cart for paper & cardboard recycling
